Mission
Theatre SKAM creates innovative theatre and live events in Victoria and on tour. We support the professional careers of a wide range of artists, with a focus on Victoria-based artists and especially emerging artists. We strive to invigorate the communities we serve while centring our six core values in everything we do.

Vision
To be an incubator for the creation of high-quality, provocative theatre that inspires and challenges audiences in Victoria and beyond.

About Theatre SKAM
Theatre SKAM has a 29-year history of producing new plays, site-specific experiences, and festivals. Founded in 1995, Theatre SKAM is a Victoria-based company that has matured from an ad hoc artist collective to a project-based company to the socially conscious artistic catalyst it is today.

Theatre SKAM strives to maintain a solid reputation as a creator of award-winning, innovative, site-specific work and intimate, elegant theatre. As a creation-based company, all of our shows are new work developed through a proven iterative process. We seek to blur the line between artistic mediums and create work representing the best of the West Coast.

We play a pivotal role in the cultural life of our region and are recognized by peers across the country for our contribution to national networks and our commitment to developing new work. We serve communities of artists and attract audiences who crave remarkable experiences in unique environments. We provide opportunities for early-career artists to gain professional experience while nurturing creativity and providing a platform for advancing a diverse array of Victoria talent.

We have five primary areas of activity:

  • Productions: We create provocative contemporary theatre that inspires and challenges audiences. As a creation-focused company, we develop new work from initial inspiration to full production through an iterative process. We present the work of others in support of our mission and vision.
  • SKAMpede: We produce a site-responsive outdoor theatre festival, SKAMpede, each July along the Galloping Goose trail and Songhees Park. We provide paid work for 70+ artists and production personnel and welcome 1000+ audience members annually.
  • Drama Camps: The SKAM School of Performing Arts provides valuable creation-based drama education for youth ages 5-18. We offer Pro-D, Spring break, and Summer break camps, with occasional after-school programs throughout the year.
  • SKAMnanigans: The Theatre SKAM Podcast, brings you into the whimsical and wacky world of theatre! Join us to hear about all things theatre in Victoria BC, the Traditional Territories of the lək̓ʷəŋən people. Listen to behind-the-scenes exclusives, lively roundtable discussions, amusing insights into the Theatre SKAM universe, and on-location interviews at SKAM events.
  • Facilities: We operate two buildings in downtown Victoria. The Satellite Studio (small black-box theatre) is a vital performance venue for the theatre community. Studio 846, a two-story building featuring hot desks, offices, and meeting and rehearsal space, is available to artists at affordable rates.
