Are you an equity-deserving artist developing a new show? Are you looking for a space to create, rehearse, or perform that isn’t your living room? Look no further than Theatre SKAM’s Rental Access Program.
What Is the Rental Access Program?
The Rental Access Program provides equity-deserving artists with discounted or no-cost access to a number of our spaces –including the Satellite Studio– during non-peak times. While our rental rates are set at cost to remain as affordable as possible, we recognize that paying for space is often not feasible for artists facing systemic barriers. This program is our way of paying it forward by removing one of the barriers artists face by connecting them to spaces.
The Rentals Access Program is made possible thanks to funding from the Victoria Foundation’s Community Grants Program, and the generous support of our landlord and largest sponsor, PARC Retirement Living. The Rental Access Program provides 600+ hours of free and discounted space each year.
Who Is it for?
This opportunity is open to equity-deserving artists at different stages of their production, from a playwright working on their newest and greatest script (we all know coffee shops are expensive) to rehearsal spaces and even a performance space. We have space for nearly every stage of the production process – except for construction.
What Spaces are Available?

When are Underutilized Times?
Underutilized times are time slots commonly left unbooked by our clients. Although this depends on the spaces and the season, they often include:
- Weekdays (most of our spaces sit empty until 6 PM)
- Weekend mornings (before 12 PM) and evenings (after 7 PM)
- Early performances on Friday and Saturday (6:30 or 7 PM start) that are finished by 8 PM
Although these times are not highly sought after, they can offer a lot of benefits, especially at the cost that we’re trying to offer (aka free). We want to get you into a space so you can start creating with less of a hurdle.
Are You In? Yes? How Do You Apply?
The Rental Access Program is an application-based program supporting equity-deserving artists, including but not limited to: Indigenous, People of Colour, LQBTQIA2S+, Disabled, Newcomer, Youth, and Seniors. Applications are reviewed by Artistic & Managing Director Logan Swain, who confirms eligibility and fit for the program. Successful applicants are then connected with Operations Manager Luanna Bowen, who manages our spaces and rental bookings.
