A Soundscape Designed by Logan Swain
Runtime: 10 minutes
Show Description
Sonic Re-Sea-ding is an experimental soundscape project designed by Logan Swain. It is series of three soundscapes created with source material from Port Renfrew, BC.
From the creator: “For the first sixteen years of my life, I spent at least one week every summer at the Pacheedaht campground in Port Renfrew, BC. While not far from home in the Cowichan Valley, it offered an escape to the wild West coast to be refreshed by the sea. I have always been captivated by the sounds of the environment around me, especially when fishing on the ocean or hiking through the mountains while hunting. As a Métis person, my relationship with nature and experiencing undisturbed sonic environments inform how I live my life.
Through the medium of soundscape composition, I am recreating the peace and solace I find on yearly hunting and fishing trips for an urban audience. I have composed soundscapes based on the following contemplations: How can I recreate the experience of being present in a wild environment in an urban setting? How does nature make you feel? What if nature impersonates the city?
Each piece will be presented to audiences differently: outdoors wearing headphones, in a box of immersive projections with surround sound, and in the dark wearing headphones and a sensory deprivation mask. I envision Sonic Re-Sea-ding as an annual project, exploring a new locale, and the relationship between a civic centre and a body of water, each time.”
Part one of Sonic-Re-Sea-Ding was at SKAMpede 2023
