Welcome the newest addition to our staff, Dr. Nancy Curry (she/her)! Dr. Nancy Curry is taking over the School Administrator role from Francyne Morrison, our interim administrator who is now assisting Logan Swain, the Operations and Facilities Manager. We are so excited to welcome her to the team. Learn a little more about Nancy by reading her bio below:
Nancy Curry, PhD, comes to Theatre SKAM from a long career as a teacher, performer, and researcher in the fields of music and theatre. She has taught music to every age from pre-school to seniors and has taught at several postsecondary institutions in Canada and the U.S. As a theatre teacher, she was on the faculty of the University of Northern Colorado’s Summer Enrichment Program for 15 years, creating courses in a variety of topics from musical theatre to literary theory to traditional mummer’s plays for gifted young people.
As a vocal coach and theatre musician, she has toured with Young Artist outreach ensembles for Edmonton Opera, Nevada Opera, and San Diego Opera, along with serving as rehearsal pianist for Edmonton Opera and Nevada Opera. She has coached opera and musical theatre at the University of Victoria. the University of Alberta, the University of Northern Colorado, and the University of Nebraska. Since her arrival in Victoria, she has music directed 9 to 5: The Musical (VOS), The Drowsy Chaperone (University of Victoria), [title of show] (Urban Arts, Victoria Fringe), and George and Gracie (Where’s Noonan?, Victoria Fringe), and created a Cabaret Summer Intensive course for the Victoria Conservatory of Music.
Nancy received her musical training at the University of Alberta and the University of Southern California, and was awarded assistantships at the Banff Centre in Opera, Art Song, and Twentieth-century Opera and Song. She is also a certified Musikgarten, Suzuki Piano, and Somatic Voiceworks (singing technique for contemporary commercial music) teacher. She recently completed a PhD in Applied Theatre and Drama Education at the University of Victoria, with a research focus on drama education with autistic students in which she tested an original drama curriculum in a pilot project.
