Happy Birthday Theatre SKAM! For your 28th birthday, your present is new artistic leadership!
Starting April 1, 2023 (Not an April Fools Joke!), Theatre SKAM will be shifting to a new Collaborative Leadership model. Hannah Mariko Bell (She/Her) and Logan Swain (He/Him) will become the Co-Artistic Producers. Long-time Artistic and Managing Producer Matthew Payne (He/Him) will join Cohort members Olivia Wheeler (She/Her) and Pedro Siqueira (He/Him) as an Artistic Associate. Matthew will step back from day-to-day operations, but remain an integral part of the company as an artist, as a grant writer, and as a mentor. Together, the Co-Artistic Producers and Artistic Associates, along with the rest of the SKAM team, will work collaboratively to continue bringing high quality programming to the Victoria community.
If you have been following along on our email list and our website’s cohort page, this news of succession won’t be too big a surprise. We’ve been working towards transition for nearly two years!
“I began working with Hannah, Logan, Olivia and Pedro a few years ago on select projects and right away I could see that all four of these artists are exciting creators and thinkers. The way they see the world and their place in it, how they make work to comment on that; there is a real synergy to their partnership and a genuine promise in their ideas around shared leadership.” (Matthew Payne, SKAM’s (Outgoing) Artistic and Managing Producer)
The team is excited to shift back to a collaborative leadership model, embracing the origins of SKAM when Sarah, Karen, Amiel, and Matthew founded the company. A return to our roots feels very in tune with SKAM’s heart and soul and we are excited to formally return to that style of leadership that centres voices with different perspectives and varied artistic interests.
