SKAMpede Festival Call for Submissions –

Call for short play for youth and paid youth performance opportunities.

The SKAMpede Festival is Theatre SKAM’s annual live performance festival that takes place along the Galloping Goose trail outdoors in Victoria. Every year, we hold a call for submissions for new short works to be performed at the festival. One special submission category is for a SKAM Young Company play.  This play  is to be performed by The SKAM  Young  Company, which consists of four teen actors who are looking to hone their craft in a professional setting.  Click the options below to find out how to submit a play idea, how to audition for SKAM Young Company,  and how to apply to be on the play selection committee!

Submit Your Play for SKAMpede's SYC

Submission Deadline: March 12

Have any writing gathering dust in your document folder?
Have you written a 10 minute play but don’t have anyone to perform it? Or perhaps a scene or two from a longer piece you’d like to see performed? We’ve got your back! Theatre SKAM needs a play for our SKAM Young Company to perform at our SKAMpede Festival, July 10th and 11th. Submit your show proposal here and send at least one page of dialogue (full scripts are ok) to A Youth Selection Committee will review all submissions and choose the play to be performed for SKAMpede 2021

Your submission should take into account:

  • Outdoor venue: SKAMpede occurs outside around the Gorge waterway and has opportunities for urban and natural settings.
  • It will have a cast of 4 teens, age range 15-19.
  • A Youth Selection Committee will judge submissions and choose one play.
  • The genre is your choice. SKAMpede often sees lots of environmental themed shows, but all genres are welcome. We are looking for topical and engaging works.

Fee: The chosen playwright will be paid a fee of $600.

Expectation: Final draft by May 31, 2021. Theatre SKAM is happy to read drafts and arrange a session with a dramaturg if desired in advance of the final deadline.

Apply to be on a Youth Play-Selection Committee (for ages 15-20)

Have you ever wanted to help choose which play is performed? Now’s your chance! Theatre SKAM has called for submissions of a 10 minute play to be performed by teens ages 15-19 at our SKAMpede Festival, July 10th and 11th. We think a Selection Committee of Teens is the best way to judge which play will be performed by the SKAM Young Company at the Festival!

The Selection Committee will have a unique opportunity to learn how to rate and judge play submissions critically with guidance from amazing local director and SKAM teaching artist, Anna Marie Anderson. Why is this play important? Who is it’s intended audience? Ask and answer these big questions! The Committee will meet during the week of March 15th to review submissions and decide which play the SKAM Young Company will perform at SKAMpede 2021!

Committee members will need to be available for the following times:

  • March 15th from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM: Meet the rest of the committee and learn what to look for when rating play submissions.
  • March 16th & 17th: Work from home. Read and rank all submissions and prepare for an engaging discussion with your peers!
  • March 18th from 11 AM to 2 PM: Meet your peer and moderator Anna Marie Anderson to discuss the submissions.
  • March 19th from 3:30 PM to 5 PM: Final discussions and choose the winner!

Fee: If you are selected, you must be available for all sessions and you will receive a $50 honorarium for your time. Thank you!
